It would appear that in real life Barry Humphries is a lot more Les Patterson than Dame Edna

You know, Kirsty, I always suspected that. I so wish it were the other way round.

I hate it when your childhood heroes let you down like this 😦

Yes! It makes one wonder just what the Dame Edna thing was all about.

Australian mainstream culture typically accepts cross dressing and drag (Les Girls, Priscilla & most recently The Dressmaker) but that doesn’t seem to translate into understanding of trans & Intersex people. Barry Humphries & Germaine Greer enlivened a dull local landscape in the 1970s and 80s but their time has passed, sadly 😥😥😥

Never had much time for her, and this makes me feel justified. Looking back on my dysphoria, I remember when I first heard about transition it was like hearing about the tunnel out of the prison – some distant but possible route to fully-realised personhood – and even back then I had the sense this person was making mockery out of the concept… and seemingly they were.
